Canadian Sikh Heritage
For this professional project I photographed people, places, and events that were part of the Canadian Sikh Heritage project sponsored by the Khalsa Diwan Society in Abbotsford, B.C. and the Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) . The project focuses in part on the 100th anniversary, in 2011, of the construction of the Gur Sikh Temple, now a national heritage site. It also includes a wealth of information about the Sikh religion, the history of Sikh communities in this region, as well as images and information about present day people, their culture, and events.
Several photos in this gallery were taken during the annual Vaisakhi celebrations, during which one ceremonial act is the changing of the covering and cleaning of the tall, bright yellow flagpole which is an essential element at every Sikh temple.
